This news comes with tremendous sadness to me as Dr. Waugh was the person I looked up to most in the 5th! I remember my first annual conference where I met her in Orlando when I was about 12 in 1998. She was the conference praise and worship musician and all i wanted to do was watch her play the piano and play it well! One afternoon during a lunch hour she says to me..."come. Sit. I see you're fond of music." I said yes ma'am. She says "do you know how to play?" I replied " I dabble!!!" she rebuttals "you're adorable, come sit. Don't let anyone discourage you from doing something you love. If you can play and you want to play...play." I took that and ran with it!!! Only a year or two later, I was called to the big leagues and ended up playing for several Annual and district conferences. I owe it all to dr Waugh for providing those encouraging words some 12 years ago. I have since parted ways with the CME church but my mother is an ordained elder in the Birmingham conference and informed of the passing of bishop lockett and I was able to attend the memorial service where I was once again united with dr Waugh for the first time in close to 7 years. She received me with open arms as if to say we had never missed a beat. She was in such good spirits. Such a precious soul and an admirable African american woman of god. I am saddened by her passing but I know she is with her maker and sitting on the banks of jordan with her late husband. I wish the family the best and offer my sincerest condolences. God be with you.
