May the joy of the Lord be yours!

As we complete the work for this calendar year allow me to share with you briefly:

1) The first semester awards to the Graham-Webb Scholarship awardees were delivered in good order; the remaining amounts for the second semester are due to be mailed in late January or early February, 2012. Thank you so very much to the churches and individuals who sent contributions for 2011 over the past several months (amount mailed thus for during 2011 to the Department of Finance for deposit in the fund is $4,045.69). Any additional contributions received will be mailed in a timely manner. Again, thank you.

2) We are diligently working to complete the draft for the new and revised Lay Manual by the close of the calendar year. After completing the first draft it will be submitted to our Chair, Bishop Teresa Snorton and the Standing Committee on Lay Ministry, as well as the College of Bishops for review. I will keep you updated on the process and the progress.

3) Most of you know that the Pastors' Conference will be convening during the second week in January 2012. As laity, let’s encourage and assist our pastors in attending this very beneficial conference. Even as a lay person, if you have the opportunity to attend, do so. I dare say that you will be strengthened and uplifted!

4) Mrs. Jolinda Dugger, our Connectional Stewardesses president, wants Stewardesses, as well as interested pastors, to visit the Lay Ministry web site at www.c-m-e.org/core/layministry.htm and find under the Stewardess link, the 2012 Liturgical Calendar.

Look for another communication in early or mid January, 2012. Let’s work and grow together. . . We must make the Lay Ministry Objectives come alive and become fully engaged in providing ministry for the 21st century.

If you are a retired minister, congratulations! You are now probably freer to arrange your time and life in new and creative ways. There are many opportunities for the talents and skills you have gathered throughout your ministry.
Retirement is a condition that offers an opportunity to re-examine the routine that we have followed for scores of years. No more daily grind, no more demanding schedules, no more endless meetings. Will this new independence - outweigh the losses? As retired ministers we are in charge of crafting our own schedule without reference to the expectations of any work place. There are no clocks to punch and no congregational demands (exception Annual Conference) that put us in a particular place at a certain time. We now have priorities to set and choices to make, and - taking account of family needs - We are the ones to make them.
The temptation to "stay the course" in order to remain "active" might be the wrong choice for us. Exploring new alternatives can be very stimulating, and if physical health permitting, keep us active.
As retired ministers, we need to determine how to make the rest of our lives the best of our lives. Nothing stays the same forever. Hence, retirement is a major change in our lives. Our bodies have started to complain and our energy level is not what it once was. We feel pain in joints that we have always taken for granted. Life is just not quite like it was a few years ago.
Changes are happening in every aspect of our lives. Therefore, we must learn to make adjustments if we are going to make the most of what we have to work with. Yes, we can resist change and live a rigid "I refuse to adjust" life if we choose. However, we need to know that every day we live will be different from the day before. Changes are taking place. Retired ministers who learn to adjust can continue to enjoy life. Those who do not adjust, slowly but surely become miserable.

Bishop Teresa E. Snorton to travel to Holy Land on Pilgrimage in delegation of 11 Women Bishops

WASHINGTON, DC — Eleven ecumenical women bishops from the United States, West Indies and Africa will leave Nov. 12 for a 10-day trip to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. The trip is sponsored by the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS) and the denomination’s Council of Bishops.
Goals of the trip are to stand in solidarity with women from Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions working for peace in the region; gather facts and stories to equip the delegation members as educators and advocates for peace after returning; and to explore partnerships for ongoing education and advocacy to affect positive change.
Four Christian denominations will be represented in the delegation: United Methodist, Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal and Christian Methodist Episcopal.
United Methodist Bishop Deborah Kiesey (Dakotas), president of GBCS’s Board of Directors, is leading the delegation. "This pilgrimage will not only inform each of us as bishops regarding the complexity of the region,” she said, “but it will also allow us to stand in solidarity with, and work alongside those women who are daily working to bring about peace."
United Methodist missionary Janet Lahr Lewis, a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries who serves in the Middle East as liaison between ecumenical groups, Israel and Palestine, will accompany the delegation.

Other staff support is being provided by Linda Bales Todd, GBCS Women’s Advocate, and Alex Baumgarten of the Episcopal Office of Government Relations.
The women bishops in the delegation are:
· United Methodist: Bishop Violet Fisher, Wilmington, Del.; Bishop Jane Middleton, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Bishop Joaquina Nhanala, Maputo, Mozambique; Bishop Mary Ann Swenson, Pasadena, Calif.; and Bishop Hope Morgan Ward, Jackson, Miss.

Itinerary:

Among many briefings, the delegation expects to meet with Altufula Women’s Rights Organization, Israeli/Arab Women’s Initiative, Jericho YWCA, Lekiya-Bedouin Women’s Project and Wi’am Conflict Resolution Center’s Women’s Project — Bethlehem.
The delegation will return Nov. 21.
The General Board of Church & Society is one of four international general program boards of The United Methodist Church. The board’s primary areas of ministry are Advocacy, Education & Leadership Formation, United Nations & International Affairs, and resourcing these areas for the denomination. Rev. Swillis worked in the vineyard for the Lord for over forty years and spent twenty-eight of those years as the pastor of St Paul CME Church in Fresno, CA (Northern California Region). Fresno is the city in which he will be remembered for his dedication, devotion and faithfulness to his Lord, Jesus Christ, his family, his Church and his Community.

THE 16th ANNUAL ONE CHURCH ONE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP CONFERENCE
OCTOBER 20-21, 2011, BIRMINGHAM, AL

The 16th Annual One Church One School (OCOS) Conference will convene next week, October 20-21, 2011, in Birmingham, Alabama. The OCOS Conference will be hosted by the Fifth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Teresa E. Snorton, Host Bishop. This message will provide you with information about pre-conference radio interviews, service projects, OCOS Conference registration and hotel information, events and workshops, and student scholarships being awarded at the Conference.

Bishop Snorton and Mrs. Diana Chambliss, the OCOS Episcopal District Director, will be interviewed tomorrow (Friday, October 14, 2011) on various local radio stations according to the following schedule:

Service Projects
We are asking conference attendees to bring school supplies or money to support South Hampton Elementary School and Wylam School. OCOS will award a monetary donation to the schools at the luncheon.

OCOS Scholarships
Miles College (Birmingham, AL) will award a $5,000 scholarship to a student (Rev. Christopher Parham) in the name of OCOS. Additionally, the Students of the Year will be awarded $1,000 scholarships.

Conference Registration
The registration fee of $95 includes the Award Luncheon. After October 10, the registration fee increases to $105.

You may register online for the 16th Annual One Church One School Conference at:www.onechurchoneschool.org . Additionally, a registration form is available at the Web site. Please bring the registration form to the registration table at the Conference.

Hotel Registration
The OCOS Conference will convene at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel located at 2101 Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North, Birmingham, AL 35203. The Conference rate is $99 per night and you must reserve your room by October 16, 2011. You may make hotel reservations via the One Church One School Web site:www.onechurchoneschool.org, or by calling 205-324-5000 and requesting the One Church One School meeting rate.

Please join me in welcoming Rev. Harlan Jones and his wife, Mrs. Sheila E. Jones, as the new Presiding Elder and First Lady of the San Francisco District. Rev. Jones replaces Rev. Harry Redds whose term was filled by Rev. Thurston Callier, due to Rev. Redds illness. We are grateful for the contributions of Rev. Redds and the dedicated and faithful role that Rev. Callier played in completing his term.

Additionally, Rev. Jones has been appointed as the new pastor of Missionary Temple C.M.E. Church. On behalf of the Ninth Episcopal District and myself, I wish to thank Rev. Dr. LeRoy and Mrs. Simmie Johnson for their many years of Servant Leadership at Missionary Temple CME Church and throughout the entire Ninth Episcopal District.

I look forward to creating new paths for Dr. Johnson to share in the leadership of the Northern California Region.

Consolidated Committee finalizes plans for

An annual ‘Unity Summit'

At the CME Convocation in Atlanta, Ga., the CME Committee to plan for a Consolidated Connectional Meeting concluded the first phase of preparation for the first meeting together of key departments and ministries of the church, beginning next year. Bishop Thomas L. Brown, Sr., Convocation Chairman, along with Bishop Paul A.G. Stewart, Sr., Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., and Bishop Teresa Snorton, led the Committee in finishing the business of laying the cornerstone for the future.

Since the conclusion of the last General Conference in July of 2010, the Committee, consisting of the College of Bishops, General Officers and Connectional leaders, has met at scheduled, regular connectional meetings to bring structure to an effort designed to streamline the fiscal and programmatic activities of the church by reducing the number of annual connectional meetings. Meeting at the 25th Convocation, the Committee made decisions regarding core registration, format and planning team, date of the event, and name. Additional parameters and deadlines for going forward were also set.
The name of the consolidated meetings will be The CME Unity Summit, which is scheduled to first convene in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 25-29, 2012. Scheduled to conduct business at the Unity Summit are the General Connectional Board, the Women’s Missionary Executive Board, Ministry to Men and Young Adult Retreats, and the activities of what is currently known as the CME Convocation, including departmental meetings and training. Committees which will now move forward with the planning process are Finance and Budget (including registration/operations/scheduling and sponsorship subcommittees); Program Committee (including plenary, workshop and education subcommittee, and worship subcommittee); a host committee, and Public Relations Committee.

It is with sadness that I carry out the duty of informing you of the passing of the Rev. Monroe Woods, Jr. He made his transition early on Monday, August 29, 2011 in Houston, Texas where he recently moved after spending many years in the state of California.

Rev. Woods served as the pastor of Hays Tabernacle, Los Angeles; Hashaway Community (now Bethel) in Long Beach; Calvary in Pasadena and spent a time in the Seventh Episcopal District.

The Commission on Social Justice and Human Concerns Statement
“Give Now to Bring Relief to Suffering in Somalia”

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? – Isaiah 58:6-7

The Commission on Social Justice and Human Concerns of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church encourages all CME members and friends to pray and support the people of Somalia in their current crisis of hunger. This unfolding humanitarian nightmare has taken the lives of tens of thousands of men, women and children over the last few months. It is estimated that 640,000 children in this impoverished and politically volatile land are severely malnourished and more than 3.2 million people are in need of life-saving assistance. Some officials at the United Nations have called this the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet.

The Commission is calling on individuals and local churches of all denominations to send immediate support to the humanitarian organization of choice, and to mark the first Sunday in September as “Save Somalia Sunday” to raise awareness and financial support. Suggested organizations for donations are the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF.org), Red Cross (redcross.org), and Christian-based organizations such as World Vision (worldvision.org) and Church World Service (churchworldservice.org).

The Commission also asks each member and friend to join and support the “Circle of Protection” called for by outstanding Christian advocacy organizations such as Bread for the World and Sojourners to stand against budget cuts that would slash funding for the “least of these” both in America and abroad. We call for the end of the gridlock that continues to threaten the US economic stability. We applaud President Barack Obama for standing firm for the working class and middle class during the negotiations, even as we urge all parties leaders to cease and desist the postures threatening the safety net for America’s children and the poor.

As always, the Commission advocates for full participation in every election at every level, and asks every church to engage in voter education, registration and mobilization. Please remember, as a church we should not endorse any candidate or political party during any set service or official gathering. You may however encourage all members to vote, be aware of issues, and you can organize efforts to get people to the polls. In light of changing regulations state to state, all members are encouraged to verify the places where you are scheduled to vote (polling places) and what identification is needed.

Lastly, we celebrate the dedication of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King National Monument in Washington, DC on this the 48^th Anniversary of Rev. King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech on Saturday, August 28, 2011. We remain inspired and involved in prophetic Christian leadership to the nation and world because of this incisive prophet-preacher-leader from the Black Church tradition.

Rev. Matthew Bonner receives full Teaching Fellowship for

Ph.D. studies at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA

Rev. Matthew W. Bonner, former pastor of the historic Saint Paul CME Church in Norfolk, VA has requested an academic sabbatical from the pastoral ministry for approximately three years, effective August 2011. The purpose is to pursue the Ph.D. degree in Education, with a concentration in Counseling in the College of Education, Department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA.
This blessed opportunity came through ODU in the form of an all-expense paid graduate assistantship, including a cost of living stipend over the next three years. In addition to his studies, Bonner’s responsibilities include teaching undergraduate students and supervising Masters candidates in the Department of Counseling and Human Services.
Bonner received the MS degree in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University in Baltimore Maryland in May 2011; the M. Div. degree in Religion from Howard University School of Divinity in 2000; and the BA degree in Africana Studies and Religion from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1996.
In thinking about this opportunity, Bonner shares, “I believe beyond a shadow of doubt that this calling is a part of God’s Master Plan to prepare me for even greater service, which the rapid changes and complexity of congregational life and ministry require in this present age. I want to make a difference as I serve my God, the church, the community, and the global society.” Bonner continues, “As I contemplate my 10 years in the pastoral ministry, I have never taken lightly the obligations of God’s calling upon my life. I strive to make my life a living testimony of what I teach and preach. I put my life totally in God’s hands, and leave the rest to Him.”
Graduating from Archbishop Carroll High School, Washington, D.C. (1992) with honors, he received the Carl Rowan’s Project Excellence –Paul Roberson four-year academic scholarship to Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 1992-1996. While at Rutgers University, he participated in numerous activities including, Vice-President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; Voter Registration; Tutor in New Brunswick Public Schools; and One Hundred Black Men’s “Adopt a Little Brother” program.
While a student at the Howard University School of Divinity, Washington, DC, he served as a local preacher at Bunton Memorial CME Church, Washington, DC. Bonner was Director of Youth Work, a Sunday School teacher, and a teacher for Seniors Ministry Bible Study.
Additionally, he served as a tutor for Slowe Elementary School, Washington, DC 1998-2000; Interned at the Constituency for Africa-Washington, DC, summer 1996; and represented Howard Divinity School at the National Conferences for Community Justice, Seminarians Interacting Program, Union Theological Seminary and Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, New York and Pauling New York, 1999.
Bonner received a number of honors and awards for his diligence. He received Howard University Trustee full-tuition scholarship at the Divinity School. He served as Editor of the Howard University School of Divinity Newsletter from 1998-2000. And in May 1998, he received the Black Methodist Clergy Scholarship. This award is given to a Methodist student in recognition of promise as a minister and for consistent academic performance in the School of Divinity. Also, his biography was published in the 22nd Annual Edition of the National Dean’s List 1998-99.
At his May 2000 graduation, Howard University School of Divinity, he received the following awards: The American Bible Society 2000 Scholarly Award for outstanding achievement in Biblical Studies, and the Dean’s Interpretation Award for high academic achievement, commitment to ministry, and demonstrated gifts for Biblical scholarship.
His first pastorate was Mount Zion CME Church in Sharon Hill Pennsylvania where he served for five years. While in the Sharon Hill Community, he was appointed to the Southern Darby Township (PA) Preservation Committee which provided him with the opportunity to make his voice heard. Its purpose was to preserve surroundings, integrity, and quality of life of the community for present and future generations through economic, social and political development and empowerment. This is another example of his willingness to go the second mile in empowering people to live a quality life. Following his experience at Mount Zion, he was assigned to Russell Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME), Alexandria, Virginia, where he served from August 2005-2010. Under his administration, the church retired the mortgage on the parsonage and instituted Family Bible Study, thus increasing the numbers engaged in weekly Bible Study.
While at Russell Temple, Bonner began his studies in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University and clinical internships. In 2009-2010 Bonner interned at Fort Belvoir Family and Marriage Center (VA) where he counseled military individuals, couples and their families. Additionally, he interned with Fairfax County Community Services Board where he counseled individuals recovering from substance abuse. Additionally, he has taught in several capacities within the New York Washington Region and the Washington- Virginia District. He served as instructor for the Interdenominational theological Center (ITC) Extension Program, in both the Washington-Virginia and Philadelphia Districts (PA) where he taught Philosophy of Religion and New Testament studies, 2009 and 2003, respectively.
He is a native of Alabama and the son of Reverend Wardell Bonner (pastor of St. John CME Church, Washington, DC) and Dr. Bester Joyce Bonner. Bonner chose as his life soul mate Michelle Demming Bonner, formerly of Montclair, New Jersey. They are the proud parents of two sons, Jacob Samuel and Joshua Matthew. Bonner is forever grateful to the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for the firm foundation it has given him throughout his life. He proclaims that all bishops, presiding elders, ministers and lay have touched his life and helped him. The church has enabled him to grow in knowledge, deepening his spiritual life and rekindling his sense of calling and destiny.

Russell Tabernacle Usher Board Presents 'Then Sings My Soul'

   On May 15, 2011, the Usher Board of Russell Tabernacle CME Church, 326 Ledbetter Rd., Spindale, NC, Winston Salem/Greenville District, presented "Then Sings My Soul," a program of hymns, authors and their stories.
   Other CME churches in the area participated on the program, as well as Wells Spring United Methodist and New Zion Baptist churches. Several songs included the participation of the congregation.
   Tying in with the theme of the program, the opening song was “How Great Thou Art.” Before each hymn was sung, someone from the choir would read the story behind the writing of the hymn. Some of the stories were very heart warming and some were written as results of a tragic incident or accident.

   One of the highlights of the program was the soul-stirring rendition of “It Is Well With My Soul,” sung by the Gospel Choir of Russell Tabernacle. The program ended with “Power in the Blood,” by the congregation.
   The program was well received by the audience. Some of the comments were “unique,” “very interesting.” “I really enjoyed that;” “I have never been to a program like this before.”
   The president of the Usher Board, Shirley G. McNeil, recognized all ushers present. She also read the stories for the congregational songs.
   The pastor of Russell Tabernacle, Rev. Nathaniel J. Poole, gave the closing remarks and the benediction.
   Most of the stories were taken from the book “Then Sings My Soul,” by Robert J. Morgan. It contains 250 of the world’s greatest hymn stories.

The "Truly Magnificent" Miami-Tampa District Conference

This year the district conference of the "Truly Magnificent" Miami-Tampa District of the Florida Region convened in the beautiful city of Ft. Lauderdale, FL on April 15, 2011.
The conference, hosted by Rev. Calvin Hopkins, his wife, Jackie, and the Williams Memorial Church family, and their generosity and hospitality exceeded our wildest imagination from the back door to the pulpit. “The Will” showed how much they love God and his people by their dedicated service during our stay at their place of worship.

   This year's theme, “The Essential Church: Poised for the 21” Century,” is the heart and core of the Miami-Tampa District, which added horizontal and vertical movement across the district, and the result of the movement produced a sense of pride which we elequently called the "SWAG."
   It is Presiding Elder Lionel G. Walker's vision as our presiding elder that we re-evaluate how we do ministry and concentrate on ministries that matter. His core philosophy is that relationship building has to be the number one priority if we are going to move forward in the 21st century.
   In doing so, we must focus on the commandments that God left us, according to Matthew 28:19-20 —“Go therefore and make-disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and the son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have command you ..."
   It is out of this commandment that this year’s vision was formed for the Miami-Tampa District of the Florida Region, given by God to our presiding elder, Dr. Lionel G. Walker, and his wife, Terry Walker, and SWAG was born.
   SWAG stands for “Soul Winning and Growing for Christ." It is our reminder that although we are individual churches, together we make up a body of churches and as a body of churches we can depend on each other as we carry out God’s mandate for building up the kingdom. Our compassion for each other has allowed us to do the work that Jesus has ordained us, and as a result, souls were saved and disciples have been created and we all have grown spiritually as we come to the end of another conference year.
   The plenary session of the conference opened with a welcome from Yvonne Sumlin, Williams Memorial CME Missionary president.
   The devotion was led by “The Mighty Men of Valor” of Trinity CME, of Tampa, Florida. Their gifts of singing inspired all of us with the variation of voice tone which shone through from tenor to bass. It is always a blessing to see the old and young men of the church leading worship which such passion for their Lord and Savior.
   We moved from the devotion to roll call which was taken by Sis. Paula Kay, president of the Women's Missionary Society of the Florida Region in the absence of Linda McNair, Miami-Tampa District secretary.
   Rev. Sharon Mitchell presented our first workshop, “It’s a family Affair. Her presentation was inviting and exhilarant, as it challenged her peers to re-think some of their perspectives on ministry. She explained that if we are going to be an essential church in the 21st century "...and effect change in our community, church and families, doing the traditional things will not attract people to our churche." It is not enough to effect change, but transformation is the core of the change.
   Our second workshop was presented by Rev. Alex Bess of Dominion Ministries of West Palm Beach, FL. His mission is to help others reach their full God-given potential. As executive director and founder of Dominion Ministries, Inc, it is his desire to facilitate the coming together of faith-based organizations, churches, and secular service organizations for the purpose of meeting the challenges that face us as a community. His goal is to solicit as much physical and spiritual help possible in accomplishing God’s mandate of unity.
   As Rev. Bess presented his workshop, he called our attention to the music of Marvin Gaye as he presented “The gospel according to Marvin Gaye.” He used Marvin’s music as a way to focus our attention on his presentation. We could all relate to the time and era of Marvin Gaye. It was in these times that we were revisiting our pride in our culture and we were fighting for our basic human rights. While these struggles were going on, music became our outlet to mask the pain. For this very reason the beat of Marvin Gaye’s music out weighed his lyrics and most of us did not hear what he was saying. We missed the message that was ahead of its time. It was in his lyrics that Marvin was presenting the gospel for the modern day society.
   Rev. Bess challenged all of us to explore new avenues to reach other segments of our population. It will take us getting out of our comfort zone to reach others through non-conventional methods. His bottom line was that we need to just let go and let God open doors of opportunity for us to reach Christ. We finished this session with a conscious mandate to rethink how we do ministries in our modern society and how we can better serve fellow man with new concepts of reaching the lost, un-churched, and the secular world.
   In keeping with the spirit of ministries that matters Sister Paula Kay, president of the Miami- Tampa Women's Missionary Society and the Women's Missionary Society of Williams Memorial CME Church in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, presented gifts cards and cell phones to Mr. Deferrari and Ms. Gargotta on behalf of the Women in Distress Organization located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
   Unfortunately, the history of the anti-domestic violence movement has meant that women have been recognized as victims long before men. In 2009, women in distress saw a significant increase in male survivors seeking services and as a result, they began to provide support group for men who are survivors of dating violence or domestic abuse. It seminars and small support groups allows a safe space for men to talk openly and without judgment about their unique experiences, so that they can better understand their situations and find the tools necessary to positively impact their future. This is an example of how we as a district can partnership with various organization and focus on ministries that matter. The donation of the various gifts card will help several women to purchase much need personal items and they will have the added resource to buy air time with the cell phones that where donated. In times of crisis being able to connect with the right authority to seek safety is an all-important task of the victims of domestic violence.    Our evening service began at 7 PM. The host church, Williams Memorial, “The Will,” uplifted our spirit with their selection of praise and worship songs followed by Gray’s Temple choir's medley of songs. But the treat of the night was watching Rev. Jeffery Whitmore of Gray’s Temple CME of West Palm Beach Florida use his gifts as he not only directed his choir but also preached, “You need a spiritual tune-up.” It was a word of wisdom and encouragement that we all will remember because his sermon convicted our souls to examine ourselves on a regular basis when it comes to spiritual matters.
   The second day of the conference opened with a hearty breakfast served by the special events team members led by Mary Alice Foster. Their hospitality was beyond measure and we were speechless to say the least. Movement progressed into praise and worship as we prepared for part two of “the gospel according to Marvin Gaye.” Rev. Alex Bess kept it simple as he condensed an eight-hour workshop into four hours. His approach was direct and straight to the point. His model was no need to sugarcoat, it is what it is.
   We were also blessed by Shaunda Kidd Wilkins' workshop, “I CAN SWIN: Encourage Me!” Her program is designed to introduce water safety along with Christian principles in a fun and interactive way. The whole goal of the plan is to reduce the number of non-swimmers in the African American culture, especially those who reside in Florida. Increasing the number of swimmers can also reduce hypertension, diabetes, asthma, obesity, and poverty by using the water as a therapeutic tool as well as a venue for exercise just like every other ethnic group in America.

   After Mrs. Wilkins' presentation we moved into celebrating Jamboree with the children, youth and the young adults of the district conference. Carter Temple CME of Bradenton, FL led the devotion with its fabulous youth choir follow by Stephanie Gadson extending a welcome on behalf of the Youth of Williams Memorial CME Church.
   The presiding elder gave the introduction and Rev. Anita Williams preceded him with the occasion. The praise and worship jamboree shifted into high gear and Williams Memorial CME of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida dazzled us with African dancing that featured all age groups. They followed their ensemble with giving dance lessons to all who would participate.
   In the young adult category Aryk Bingham competed in the oratorical contest with his speech on discipleship and why we are disciples of Christ. His passion for what it means to him to serve as a disciple of Christ set the atmosphere for all of us to practice a new approach to the invitation to discipleship in that we are inviting people to become disciples first as they also accept Christ as our Lord and savior. It was Rev. Anita Williams of Bryant Chapel CME Church of Tallavast, FL, who was able to put onto practice this new approach to extending an invitation to discipleship.
   While the anointing was high and the spirit uplifted we moved to the presentations of gifts followed by an apprecialion brunch for Presiding Elder Lionel G. Walker and our lovely first lady Terry Walker. We were giving opportunities to present gifts individually and by the churches we represented as we fellowship by nurturing our bodies with the meal that was prepared by the special events team of Williams Memorial. Remarks were made and the benediction was given as we all migrated back to our respective locations to reflect on the revelations we all received during our gathering in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Excitement is in the air! We are rapidly approaching the 17th Quadrennial Assembly of the Women's Missionary Council which will be held June 25 - July 2, 2011 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center in Schaumburg, IL. This message will help you to prepare for the Assembly.

The Origin of Father’s Day

A Father’s Day Message

This Sunday across America and the Nation we will celebrate Father’s Day. The beauty of this day is that it was the original brainchild of a woman who was raised by a single father. Her name was Sonora Smart and after her mother died her father raised her and her siblings. She actually was inspired after hearing a sermon on Mother’s Day at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church. To honor her father she held a special recognition on his birthday which was June 19, 1910. While Mother’s Day was readily accepted and approved by Congress, it took over 60 years before the third Sunday in June was approved as a national observance of Father’s Day. Some important events to note are: This initiative was started by a female who recognized the role and importance of fathers; Second point, she held her own recognition before it was recognized nationally and thirdly, even though it took a long time to become a national holiday, over time her dream came true.

The recognition of Father’s Day reminds us that change doesn’t come easily, but it can come if we persevere. We recognize God as our heavenly Father, but thank God He gave us earthly fathers and father figures to nurture, guide and love us.

On this Father’s Day, let us give thanks for fathers everywhere and share this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson with others:

‘Right now is the time to be kind;
You can not do a kindness too soon,
For you never know how soon it will be too late”

Trinity CME presents 'The 12 Tribes of Israel'

Toccoa GA—Trinity CME of Toccoa, GA, Rev. Ricky S. Hammond, pastor, kicked off its spring fundraiser with the presentation of The Twelve Tribes of Israel program. Every member of the church was systematically recruited to participate, resulting in an awesome time for everyone as well as their best fundraiser of the conference year. The members both in the congregation and those participating in the skit wore afgans, caftans, and other African attire. They also sat in groups under flags representing their respective tribe.

The tribe of Naphtali, consisting of Sis. Stephanie Green (captain), Sis. Carmelita Hammond (coordinator), Sis. Elaine Tobias, Sis. Estelle Jones, Sis. Hazel Jones, and Sis. Winnie Jarrett, raised the most funds and celebrated by screaming, shouting, and moving in a way resembling the holy dance. Captains Sis. Mary McCurdy and Arnethia Tate came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. To be fair, Rev. Hammond made himself a member of each tribe through donations and attached himself to the tribe with the least funds to boost their offering.

Rev. and Mrs. Hammond were excited from the start to bring this interesting and educational program to Trinity; and because of its success members are already talking about next year’s program. Rev. Darryl Johnston of Dear Court CME was the guest speaker. To God be the Glory!

CED102 CLASS REGISTRATION DEADLINE 05/14/2011

May 5, 2011—The Department of Christian Education presents a new series of online course aimed towards Christian Education Certification. We have created this Online Christian Education Certification Program for Pastors, Christian Education Leaders, Teachers in the Church, Young Adult Leaders, and Children and Youth Leaders.

REGISTER NOW for our First Offering of this Class in the Series:
"CED102 - Understanding CME History and Polity"
Successful completion of CED101 "Christian Education in the African American Church" is a prerequisite for enrolling in this class.

Upon completion of this certification program, the learner will be able to:
* Understand Principle-Centered Leadership
* Practice effective personal and interpersonal leadership skills
* Explore the meaning of leading from within
* Examine personal and interpersonal leadership skills
* Improve overall personal and interpersonal leadership skills

Our online courses are designed to provide Theory, Knowledge, and Skills. This Class will be offered May 2011 through June 2011 and the Certificate of Completion will be recognized at the Annual C.M.E. Convocation in September for those persons completing all six modules (CED101-CED106). This six-session online courses will cover topics that are important to the design, process or evaluation of efforts to improve the quality of Christian Education in our local churches. The learning modules include:
   * CED101 - Christian Education in the African American Church
   * CED102 - Understanding C.M.E. History and Polity
   * CED103 - Providing Age-Appropriate Educational Ministry
   * CED104 - The "Graying" Church Through Educational Ministry
   * CED105 - Identifying Leadership Skills
   * CED106 - Creating Christian Education Project
Students will access the course information remotely, and will need access to a computer with 32 MB RAM and at least 28.8 kbps modem, an internet connection, and an email account. 5th Episcopal District - Alabama Disaster Relief

Thanks to everyone across the CME Connection who has expressed concern and lifted prayers for the people of Alabama. The effects of the tornado damage done on April 27 to several communities in the Southeast, particularly in the state of Alabama, are massive. The death count is now around 300 and there are still a number of persons missing. Search and recovery efforts are still underway. A number of CME families have been impacted directly or indirectly by these tragic deaths. Schools remain closed and power is gradually being restored. We solicit your continued prayers.

Cash Donations
The College of Bishops is asking CME individuals and congregations to collect and send an immediate offering for disaster relief in Alabama and other affected areas during the month of May. Checks should be made payable to “CME Department of Finance”, noting it is for Disaster Relief. These donations and future contributions should be mailed to the Presiding Bishop of your Episcopal District.

The following disaster relief efforts have been organized in the 5th and welcome your support:

Birmingham District
Individuals and congregations (local and from nearby states) are asked to donate the following items:
Bottled water, tooth paste, tooth brushes, soap, deodorant, shaving cream, disposable razors, shampoo, body lotion, combs, sanitizer, Kleenex tissue, toilet tissue, and new or clean, gently worn folded clothing (men, women and children, socks, and underwear (new) for all ages.
The presidents of each Missionary Society are to supply the following items to Mrs. Geraldine Odom, Birmingham Regional Missionary President: wash cloths, diapers, and female sanitary items.
All items can be dropped off at the Metropolitan CME Church, 1600 Avenue K, Ensley, Birmingham, AL, Rev. Jacob Colbert, Pastor, Phone # (205) 520-4209.

Bailey Tabernacle CME Church (Rev. Dr. W. Clyde Jones, pastor) is providing meals for the community. Food donations (canned goods, non-perishable items, frozen items) can be taken to the church at 1117 23rd Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401-2941.

Bailey Tabernacle is also serving as the host site for the American Red Cross’ Spiritual Response Team’s Condolence Center, where families who have lost a loved one can go and receive spiritual/pastoral care and other forms of support.

Matthew 25: 35-36 reminds us “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me.”

Let us work together for the good of our community by showing the love of God to our neighbors in this time of pain and loss. Thank you for all your support!

CME Churches in Alabama After the Storms

April 28, 2011

Dear Connectional Members and Friends,

The storms and tornadoes in Alabama have caused widespread damage and significant loss of life. In conversations with the Presiding Elders, I have gathered the following information about our churches and members. The CME Church is blessed in that, so far, we are unaware of any death of any of our members. Trinity Church in Pratt City has some damage and a number of church members there have damage to their homes. A member of Porter-St. Paul Church in Northport lost her home. A number of members of Southside CME Church in Birmingham have damage to their homes. A couple of churches in the Mobile District have minor damage. Just about everyone statewide is still without power. Telephone service, even cell phone service, is sporadic. Authorities estimate 3-4 days for power to be restored. We will update you on any additional information we receive.

Please keep the members of our church and all of those who have been impacted by these events in your prayers in the days ahead.

Regarding Potential Cuts in U.S. Domestic Programs

Dear Friends of Christ:

Presently, our U.S. Congress is considering a budget plan that would make a 9 percent cut in discretionary spending while giving a 2 percent increase for military spending. This would be devastating for domestic programs that provide basic nutrition, health, and opportunity to poor children and international aid programs that save lives every day.

As a country, we face difficult financial choices, but one thing that should not be on the table is to abandon the poor and vulnerable while allowing more military spending.

The CME Commission on Social Justice and Human Concerns asks you to tell Congress to get its budget priorities in order. Please take time, right now, to send the below letter either by Email or First Class Mail to: Your Senators and Your Representative. LETTER WRITING MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Mississippians Remember Life and Legacy of Bro. Floyd Miller

The Town of Coldwater, MS and Holly Springs, MS, colleagues, clergy,
and former students gather to remember Bro. Floyd Miller.

The Town of Coldwater concluded its Black History Month Celebration Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 1 PM in the Coldwater Cultural Center with a salute to the Life and Legacy of Floyd Miller. Mr. Floyd Miller (1927-2011), the teacher, school principal, Jeanes supervisor, school administrator, pioneer, trailblazer, and community leader, died on January 17, 2011 at his home in Holly Springs. He began his teaching career in the fall of 1952 as a classroom teacher in the Lafayette County School System after graduating from Mississippi Industrial College in the spring of that year. He came to Tate County in 1953 as a classroom teacher at Coldwater Junior High.

In 1956, he was promoted to the principalship at Coldwater Junior High. In 1958, he was promoted to Jeanes supervisor, in charge of the supervision of Negro education in the Tate County Schools. In 1960, he became the “Founding Principal” of Tate County Colored High School. In 1970, he was assigned as the “Founding Principal” of Coldwater Elementary School, and retired in 1987.

Mr. Miller attended Laws Hill Elementary School in Marshall County. He attended as a boarding student Junior high school at the Rosenwald School in Holly Springs. Mrs. Earlean Gilmore, a former student at Tate County High, gave a brief overview of the Rosenwald Schools. She stated the Rosenwald Schools were established by the philanthropic Julius Rosenwald to aide Negro Education in the South. More than 600,000 Negros attended these schools between 1914 and 1950. Mr. Miller was one of these students. Rosenwald spent more than $4 million dollars of his personal fortune to aide Negro education. By today’s standards this would be about $42 million dollars.

Because there were no public high schools in Mississippi for Negros, in 1946 he entered the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church’s Mississippi Industrial College Preparatory School at Holly Springs and graduated in 1945. In 1945, he was drafted into the United States Army and served as a medic. He was honorably discharged on November 5, 1946. He entered CME Church-related Mississippi Industrial College in 1948, and received Bachelor of Science degrees in Social Studies and Business Administration in 1952.

Mrs. Wilma Jean Moore, a former teacher who worked under his administration gave an overview of the Mississippi Industrial College Preparatory School and Mississippi Industrial College. She stated that because all funds for Negro secondary schools were cut by the Mississippi legislature in 1902, Bishop Elias Cottrell (1853-1937) the seventh bishop of CME Church, established both the preparatory school and the college in 1903. This preparatory school and college served as a beacon of hope for the Negro race for more than 75 years. Mr. Miller benefitted from the labors of the sainted Bishop.

Mrs. Hattie Wooten, a former student at Coldwater Junior High School in the 1950’s, stated that Mr. Miller instilled pride in his students, the school, and the community at-large. Mrs. Cassandra Robinson, who attended elementary school at Coldwater, gave an overview of what Mr. Miller’s role as a Jeanes supervisor must have entailed. She stated that he played a huge role in family involvement, consolidation of Black schools, providing resources, and increasing grade levels. Mr. Charles Crouther, a former teacher, spoke about Mr. Miller as a high school principal. He stated that, “Mr. Miller established the school.” He gave it its culture, and definition. “Let me tell you something mister, “Tate County High School was the flagship school of all schools in North Mississippi.” Mrs. Rosetta Edwards spoke about Mr. Miller as her elementary principal in her initial years as a teacher. She stated that Mr. Miller was a very orderly person; you had to be on time for school, for meetings, dress professionally, be in your classroom and do your job.

Other former students who gave expressions were Wayne King, Charles Wooten, George McGhee, and Winson King. Expressions were also given by his nieces, Ms. Beverly Rose Phillips, and Mrs. Bernice Howell. An expression was given also by his church pastor, Rev. Denise Modest, pastor of Anderson Chapel CME Church, in Holly Springs.

The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Clen D. Moore, Jr., former assistant principal to Mr. Miller. Mr. Moore spoke from the subject, “Education to the rescue: Along came a man from Holly Springs.” He stated that, “Mr. Miller's push was to have the best teachers on his team, meeting the challenges and opportunities of the new day. He built a very competitive school in academics, sports and other activities. His school was second to none. He wanted his school to be the best in everything. His school was always clean, just like the man in charge of it. He was opened to innovative practices and gave teachers a chance to work outside the box. As a result, he had an excellent turn-out with his students. The majority of them studied hard, preparing for college, and many went on after graduation to become teachers, lawyers, librarians, engineers, community, civic and church leaders. He concluded by saying, “Certainly, Mr. Miller, because of his many contributions to the Tate County Family, will always be remembered and appreciated.”

Mrs. Georgia Vera Carr-Davis served as the song leader for the program, and led the collect in singing: The school song, "Hail to Tate County High," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Steal Away to Jesus," and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."

It was announced that a scholarship has been set up in honor of Mr. Miller. Mrs. Shirley Hankerson, Mrs. Nancy Dandridge, and Mr. Charles Crouther are serving as co-chairs. Also, a Gravesite Tombstone Fund, and a Memorial Marker Fund (to be placed in Coldwater) has been established. Dr. Hamb Sends Out Thanks for Gala Support

Dear CME Members, Missionaries and Friends,

The Gala 2011 Celebration, sponsored by the Balm in Gilead, was held last Friday evening at the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner Hotel in McLean, VA. I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported and/or attended this wonderful event that paid tribute to the effective collaborative partnerships with the Balm in Gilead by the Missionary presidents of the three African American Methodist denominations: Dr. Jamesina Evans (African Methodist Episcopal Church); Dr. Barbara Shaw (African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church) and yours truly (Christian Methodist Episcopal Church).

The highlights of the Gala Celebration were the outstanding collection of songs performed with exuberance by the legendary Mr. Richard Smallwood and Vision, and the phenomenal liturgical dance performance by our own Claudina Pearl Harrison. Arrangements for Bro. Edward Duren
Prayers are requested and unity support for the family of the late Mr. Edward Lee Duren Sr., spouse of the late Rev. Emma T. Duren, a past presiding elder of the Charleston-Columbia District, Carolina Region. The Reverend Emma Duren was the first appointed female presiding elder of the 7th Episcopal District by Bishop Oree Broomfield. Rev. Emma Duren was also a former Judicial Council member.

Mr. Duren is survived by one son, Edward L. Duren Jr., of the home, formerly of Chicago, IL, and St. Paul, MN. Mr. Edward L. Duren was a faithful member and supporter of Hanes Memorial CME Church. He traveled throughout the CME Connection with his beloved spouse and supported many connectional causes.

A Celebration of Life and Service for Bishop Wallace Edward Lockett, the 57th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, was held on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Metropolitan CME Church in Houston, Texas; Rev. Dr. Bobby Best, Pastor; Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., Presiding Prelate of the Eighth Episcopal District and Host Bishop. The Eulogist was Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, the Presiding Prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District and Chairman of the College of Bishops.

An Announcement to the CME Church from
the 2010-2014 Committee on Episcopacy
and the College of Bishops

After prayerful deliberation, the Senior Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt, Jr. and the chair of the Committee on Episcopacy, the Rev. John W. Honeysucker, make the following announcements regarding Episcopal supervision. These announcements are occasioned by the death of one of our Episcopal leaders, Bishop W. Edward Lockett.

Bishop Lockett's death leaves a void in the leadership of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and specifically in the Fifth Episcopal District.

In keeping with the authority within THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2006, specifically within ¶432.7, page 119, and ¶1402, §7, page 432, the Committee on Episcopacy has made the following appointments:

1. The assignment of Bishop Teresa E. Snorton as the Presiding Bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District, effective immediately; and

2. The recall of Bishop Ronald M. Cunningham to active service and the assignment of Bishop Ronald M. Cunningham to the Eleventh Episcopal District, effective immediately.

The Senior Bishop, on behalf of the College of Bishops, also announces the following administrative appointments, in the place of Bishop W. Edward Lockett:

1. The appointment of Bishop Sylvester Williams, Sr., as the chair of the Department of Ministry to Men;

2. The appointment of Bishop James B. Walker as the chair of the Committee on Economic Development;

3. The appointment of Bishop Teresa E. Snorton as vice chair of the CIT Advisory Committee and the CIT Standing Committee, and as vice chair of the Board of Directors of the Connectional Headquarters; and

4. The appointment of Bishop Teresa E. Snorton as representative to the Commission on Pan-Methodism.
